Alipay, a major Chinese payment platform affiliated with the Alibaba Group, has drawn public criticism by launching a new function, Quanzi (roughly “Circle” in Chinese), similar to Google Plus, which invites users to join different circles based on their profiles and share information with each other. The new function, however, led many female users to post alluring and even obscene selfies after it set a rule that only women could upload pictures, while men were only allowed to click “like” or comment on the pictures. Many netizens thus criticized Alipay for “facilitating prostitution.” Observers said that most of the users hope Alipay could remain simply a mobile payment service, rather than a social networking tool like its major opponent WeChat.
