Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive-elect of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), was presented with the official certificate of appointment by Premier Li Keqiang on behalf of the State Council in Beijing on the morning of April 11.

Afterwards, President Xi Jinping and Li each met with her separately, and expressed their confidence in her ability to lead the SAR government, since she met the long-standing requirements laid down by the central government for every chief executive of the HKSAR, including unequivocal patriotism, rich experience in government affairs, the necessary capabilities to lead, integrity and popular support.

Xi stressed this year is the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return, and in the 20 years, the implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” has won worldwide recognition as a great success - as shown by Hong Kong’s progress in all aspects of its development. Yet, Hong Kong also faces unexpected questions and challenges. That means the next CE has a lot to live up to in terms of responsibility, mission and honor, and must be a resolute implementor of “One Country, Two Systems,” a determined defender of the nation’s Constitution and Hong Kong’s Basic Law and an unshakable protector of the rule of law.
