North Korea once again challenged the international community by performing its sixth hydrogen bomb test, on September 3.
South Korean media revealed that an “earthquake” around magnitude 6 hit the North at noon that day. Later on, the North’s leader, Kim Jong-un, declared that his country’s H-bomb test had been a “total success.”
China’s foreign ministry delivered a statement the same day strongly condemning its neighbor for launching a nuclear test in the face of the world’s opposition.
North Korea’s nuclear test has further increased tension on the Korean peninsula. Four days after the test, South Korea announced that it had finished the “temporary” deployment of the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system, despite strong opposition from China which believes that THAAD is actually being used by the US to monitor it, rather than North Korea.
The United Nations Security Council held an emergency conference following the North’s nuclear test where the US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, said North Korea was “begging for war” and appealed for the UN to implement strict sanctions against North Korea.
