Lawmakers to Amend Chinese Constitution

The 12th Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s highest legislative body, held its last meeting on January 30, during which the delegates present passed a resolution to submit a draft Constitutional amendment to the new NPC, whose delegates have been elected and are scheduled to hold their first meeting on March 5, 2018.

The 12th Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s highest legislative body, held its last meeting on January 30, during which the delegates present passed a resolution to submit a draft Constitutional amendment to the new NPC, whose delegates have been elected and are scheduled to hold their first meeting on March 5, 2018.
 
The Constitutional amendment, according to Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the 12th NPC Standing Committee, includes the key policies and guidelines defined at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), in particular “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.” 
 
Zhang claimed that the Constitutional amendment will give the CPC and the government an opportunity to promote the rule of law and improve China’s jurisprudence around the Constitution. 
 
No official source has yet revealed any detailed content of the amendment.
