Beijing’s new international airport, located 46 kilometres south of downtown Beijing, will start trial operations in October 2019. The airport, designed to relieve pressure from the overcrowded Beijing Capital International Airport, is expected to handle 620,000 flights, 100 million passengers and four million tons of cargo annually. The airport’s terminal buildings cover a space of 313,000 square metres, featuring a centrepiece and five arms like a phoenix extending its wings. The airport will become an integrated transportation hub that comprises high-speed trains, expressways and rail transit systems, and will play a pivotal role in accelerating the economic growth of Beijing, Tianjin and the Xiongan New Area. It is one of China’s mega engineering projects that represent the country’s unique wisdom in architecture, design and craftsmanship.
