North Korea Would Gain Nothing From Continued Nuclear Tests: Scholar

At this point, continued nuclear tests would not be in North Korea's interest and would bring more economic and global pressures

North Korea has suspended nuclear testing because it already developed the capacity for nuclear self-defense, and because of pressure from China about keeping the peace on the Korean Peninsula. That's according to Song Wei, a professor of international relations at the Renmin University of China, writing for Haiwainet.cn, a news site owned by People’s Daily.

The move also leaves the US no excuse to launch a military attack against North Korea. At this point, the scholar believes continued nuclear tests would not be in the nation's interest and would instead bring more economic and global pressures.

It's a good thing for North Korea, China and the region. North Korea will have the time and energy to focus on its economic development. It will improve relations with China to gain support and help. If North Korea continued down its previous path, China would have been forced to join the international community in imposing increasingly stricter sanctions against the country.

The announcement also significantly reduces the change of a military conflict, Song says. And it may encourage positive exchanges among China, North Korea and the US over the Korean Peninsula crisis, resulting in better security and economic situation for Northeast Asia as a whole.
