Salary Ranking Shows Education Background to Be Decisive Factor

Graduates from better-ranked universities attract better starting pay, although the differences may not last

A website dedicated to salary-related information released a ranking of Chinese colleges in terms of monthly salary for new graduates in 2013, 2015 and 2017.

The website xinchou.cn found that Tsinghua University and Peking University, both in Beijing, took the top two places in the ranking of monthly average pay in 2017; among the top 50 universities, only 13 are not on the list of 100-odd universities the State priorities in resource allocation; science and engineering majors attract better pay than others; and of the top 200 universities, 44 are in Beijing and 21 in Shanghai.

Pan Helin, a post-doc in applied economics at the China Academy of Fiscal Science, writing on news portal sohu.com, said the ranking demonstrates that educational background is a decisive factor for employers which results in salary differences. When the employer cannot determine whether an employee can meet the requirements of a job, even after an interview or test, educational background is used to determine an employee’s personal capacity, he said.

College students should heed the reality that educational background is an indispensable stepping stone in career development. That said, they need to understand that differences in educational background mean that while they may be a little behind at the outset of their career, personal effort determines where they will reach, he noted.
