A mother in Henan Province who for decades raised a boy believing him to be her once-abducted son is now suing local authorities after recently discovering they had returned the wrong child. Zhu Xiaojuan’s baby boy was kidnapped in 1992 by the nanny she hired to care for him. Three years later, a local court contacted her saying they had found her son, and the child was a DNA match. It wasn’t until recently when the nanny, moved by a TV program about missing children, informed Zhu’s now adult biological son of his true identity. Zhu and her biological son have since reunited and her adopted son, who had been abandoned as a baby, said Zhu would always be his true mother. Zhu is still suing the court, but said she would not press charges against the nanny out of gratitude for raising her biological son. Zhu’s compassion confused netizens, who argued that the nanny committed the real crime. Some have appealed for authorities to prosecute the nanny for kidnapping.
