Instead of skinny, superhuman models on the catwalk, a recent fashion show held in a traditional Beijing courtyard caught public attention for featuring 10 everyday-looking people strutting their stuff. According to media reports, all of the modeled designs were rejected entries from Taobao’s 2019 Maker Festival held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Sui Yi, a designer at the show, told The Beijing News that he did not think the Maker Festival should have the final say on fashion. “This is a way of breaking with common practice,” he said. “Differing from regular fashion shows which focuses on clothes, our show focuses on people as well. You can see every model’s characteristics,” he added. Netizens welcomed the event as a breath of fresh air, saying it shows how clothes would fit the bodies of ordinary people, which actually provides a better reference for consumers.
