According to the white paper “Food Security in China” which was released by the State Council in October 2019, grain output in China has grown steadily to a per capita rate of around 470 kilograms, higher than the world average. China feeds nearly 20 percent of the world’s population with only 9 percent of global farmland and 6 percent of freshwater resources. Meanwhile, China has eliminated non-tariff measures such as tariff rate quotas and import licenses for certain agricultural products. The country has also further opened its food market and relaxed entry restrictions on foreign investments in the agricultural sector. The white paper stated that China will continue to prioritize while strengthening international cooperation in agriculture within the framework of South-South cooperation.
