A children’s book on animals has been pulled from shelves amid netizen outcry over a section that describes civet cats as “edible.” Netizens criticized the book for promoting the sale and consumption of wild animals, especially during China’s fight against the Covid-19 outbreak, which reportedly originated from the SARSCoV-2 virus carried by wild bats for sale at a Wuhan market. The book, Little Animal Encyclopedia, was published by an imprint under Wuhan University. Native to tropical regions in Asia and Africa, civet cats can host the SARS-CoV-2 virus, experts said. Netizens warned that such epidemics would reoccur if younger generations are not properly educated about protecting wild animals and the environment.
