Police in Beijing arrested a man for beating an elderly man to death who criticized him for pulling down his face mask in a store during the Covid-19 outbreak. But netizens were further outraged to find the man had been released from prison seven months earlier after having his sentence reduced nine times on a murder conviction. Guo Wensi, 38, was originally sentenced to life in prison for killing his girlfriend in 2004. However, Guo’s sentence was commuted nine times between 2007 and 2018. He served 14 years for the crime. In March, he attacked the 72-year-old man in a Beijing store and fled the scene. The man died six days later in hospital from his injuries. Since China has strict requirements for commuted sentences, netizens speculated that corruption played a part in the court decisions. Legal authorities in Beijing have formed a task force to investigate the reduced sentences in question.
