After a long hiatus from the Chinese internet, actress Joan Chen has recaptured attention on Weibo for sharing her personal experiences during the coronavirus. With more than 670,000 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the US, Chen’s posts describe how ordinary people are fighting the virus from home. Unlike other bloggers who focus on the suffering of patients and frontline workers, the 59-year-old Chinese-American actress talked more about her thoughts on life as society slows down in quarantine. People learn from tragedy, Chen said in an interview with Beijing News, and the pandemic has given people a chance to appreciate the many beautiful things in life like nature and family. Chen also called on people to abandon discrimination, which does nothing to fight the virus. “The world has been rushing forward like a violent flood and we have become too agitated to think and face up to ourselves,” she wrote in one post. “Covid-19 brought about bitter suffering and death and forced us to press pause on our lives. What should the survivors learn from the pandemic about human values and tolerance?” she continued. The post received more than 40,000 likes and nearly 18,000 shares.
