More Education on Illegal Poaching Needed

Fangyuan Magazine July 15, 2020

By NewsChina Updated Oct.1

On February 24, 2020, China’s top legislature imposed a total ban on the consumption of wild animals and launched a nationwide crackdown on the illegal wildlife trade. Over the years, illegal poaching and the trade in wild animals continued despite repeated bans and a hidden industrial chain has been formed that includes poaching, transportation and consumption, as well as domestication and breeding. Most wild animals ended up on dining tables or in leather and fur processing factories. Where there is demand there is a market and it is urgent to stop poaching at the source - buyers and sellers. The majority of poachers are young farmers with limited education and many are not aware that their activities are illegal. To better protect wildlife, more legal awareness and promotion of the law are necessary in rural areas.
