A mother who complained after her 9-year-old daughter’s teacher addressed questions from her class about pregnancy has sparked discussions online about sex education. In screenshots from posted chat records, the teacher responded that her students were curious about a pregnant teacher at their school, which she saw as an opportunity to discuss sex education topics. The mother threatened to report her to the head of the school, arguing the students were too young, and she also criticized the teacher for not separating the girls from the boys when addressing those questions. Most netizens sided with the teacher, saying that proper sex education empowers and protects children. Many netizens criticized Chinese parents for being too conservative about discussing sex with their children, which could lead them to turn to inappropriate sources, such as porn. Others appealed to education authorities to raise awareness about the importance of sex education and provide schools with courses and textbooks.
