A 10-year-old student in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, was hospitalized after he fell into convulsions caused by his parents’ excessive pressure over his studies. Media reports described the boy’s parents as overly strict, requiring him to do additional homework every day. Although the boy was already first in his class, his parents increased his homework and scolded him for the smallest errors. Late last year while reading a textbook, the boy suddenly began convulsing and fell to the ground. He recovered several minutes later, but the symptoms have become chronic. The boy’s doctor, Li Xujuan, told news portal The Paper that the boy would break down and cry whenever homework was mentioned during his stay at hospital. The boy is undergoing therapy and showing signs of improvement, but Li worries that he will relapse once left in his parents’ care. Netizens said fierce scholastic and societal competition is driving many worried parents to push their children to a breaking point.
