The Fourth China International Import Expo (CIIE) was held in Shanghai from November 5 to 10, where a total of 420 new technologies and services were exhibited.

Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony by video link on November 4, where he said that “opening-up is the hallmark of contemporary China,” Xinhua reported. Xi said that China will firmly safeguard multilateralism and share market opportunities with the world.

More than 2,900 enterprises from 127 countries and regions participated in the CIIE. New products and technologies covered food and agricultural products, vehicles, technical equipment, consumer goods, medical instruments and healthcare as well as trade services. The expo saw deals inked with a total intended transaction value of US$70.72 billion.

“Low emission” and “green” were buzzwords at the expo, where auto manufacturers showed off concept cars using new energy. The medical equipment and healthcare products exhibition area saw 135 technology and product debuts, exceeding all other areas.

The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences published its 2021 report on the world’s opening-up during the expo. Using 29 quantifiable indicators to measure a country or a region’s level of opening-up, the report says that the world’s general opening-up index dropped by nearly 4 percent between 2008 and 2019, with the US falling from 1st to 22nd, and China rising from 62nd to 40th.
