A cargo transit station built in Laos’ capital Vientiane for the China-Laos-Thailand railway opened in early July, completing the new cross-border railway line.

Planned since 2010, the ChinaLaos-Thailand railway is 1,830 kilometers long. In December 2021, the section that connects Kunming, capital of China’s southern Yunnan Province and Vientiane, opened, although still only to cross-border freight along the line’s entire length.

China and Laos use standard gauge rail, while Thailand uses narrow gauge, so the reloading yard is for transferring freight. The China-Laos-Thailand railway will smoothly connect to Thailand’s capital Bangkok and Laem Charbang Port. Analysts believe this railway will greatly improve the efficiency of transport between China and Southeast Asia.
