Shanghai Gets Speedy with Grand Prix

Xinmin Weekly April 22, 2024

By NewsChina Updated Jul.1

After a four-year hiatus, the China leg of the Formula 1 Grand Prix resumed from April 19 to 21 at Shanghai International Circuit, marking the race’s 20th anniversary in the metropolis. Tickets for single-day or three-day access quickly sold out for the 200,000-capacity circuit. Shanghai native Zhou Guanyu, the first Chinese F1 racing driver, secured an unprecedented qualifying spot among the top-10 in last year’s sizzling Doha F1 Grand Prix in Qatar but finished in 14th place in his home town this year. Dutch racer Max Verstappen claimed his maiden win in Shanghai after completing 56 laps on the 5.451-kilometer circuit shaped like the Chinese character for the word shang, which means “up.” The maintenance of the racing track and the professionalism of domestic referees were as reliable as ever. This sporting event not only boosts Shanghai’s cultural and tourist industries, but also enhances the city’s international image.
