More Nurses Needed for Elderly Chinese

The shortage of nurses severely affects China's growing elder care industry

By Zhang Qingchen Updated Jul.25

A recent report on Chinese care services released by the China Philanthropy Research Institute (CPRI) on July 19 shows that the country is suffering from a severe shortage of nurses and other caregivers, as well as poor management in the sector. This particularly affects elder care, as tens of millions of Chinese will need facilities and services in retirement.

This is a result of a lack of training, Gao Huajun, executive vice-president of CPRI said, adding that there's a lack of innovative training for nurses and other paramedical staff. In particular, he added, elder care needs a lot of improvement, but if the talent and support can be put in place, the sector has a promising future. The best way to develop nurses, he noted, is to broaden their career options, build up their skills, and attract more staff.

Caixin, commenting on the report, noted that China should learn from the experiences of Germany and Japan, where both the training of nurses and the provision of old age care are carefully professionalized.
