From the Mainland to Maine

How Chinese high school kids live the American dream

By Xie Yi Updated Apr.20

For several years New York-based filmmaker Miao Wang has followed the influx of Chinese teenagers studying in private schools in the United States. She is fascinated by how the young students experience cultural clashes here and, as their American dreams slowly coalesce, how they ruminate about their personal identity and understanding of home and country.

Filmed over three years in China and the US, Wang's latest documentary Maineland follows Harry and Stella, two affluent and cosmopolitan Chinese teenagers as they settle into a boarding school in blue-collar rural Maine.

Wang tells NewsChina about the stories behind the scenes and how she views the lives of Chinese high schoolers in the US.
