Chinese internet companies have been giving users with high personal credit scores access to
preferential policies, such as forgoing deposits on shared bikes, car rentals or even apartments. The personal credit score system is based on criteria such as the ability to fulfill contracts, social connections, consumption capabilities and credit history. Some local governments have also unveiled personal credit scores for residents and those with a good record could more easily land a job, receive medical care, obtain loans from banks or secure a hukou, China’s permanent residency permit. Experts cautioned that credit scores have made lives more convenient, but it is high time to distinguish commercial credit from personal credit before establishing a nationwide social credit system.
