For the majority of Chinese employees who work from 9am to 5pm, nightlife constitutes a major part of their leisure activities, particularly for those living in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The Chinese capital is set to release measures to boost consumption in the nighttime economy, according to the city’s annual government work report of 2019. Night consumption has contributed 55 percent to the output value of the service sector in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. According to a survey by the Gaogong Industrial Research Institute, the global lighting market reached 275 billion yuan (US$40b) in 2017. The Chinese market reached 68 billion yuan (US$10b) in 2017 and it is expected to reach nearly 100 billion yuan (US$14.5b) by 2020. Experts argued that alongside the rapidly growing night economy market, it is important that the market plays a decisive role in the allocation of resources.
