‘AI Daughter’ Comforts Grieving Mother

A mother reportedly had her deceased daughter’s voice synthesized using AI technology. Ever since Li Yang’s 14-year-old daughter, Chen Jin, died from T-lymphoblastic lymphoma, Li had yearned to hear her voice once again. Li’s wish came true after technicians with a lab at Alibaba synthesized Chen’s voice and had it read one of her writings to Li. According to technicians, Li looked calm and peaceful as she listened to Chen’s voice, but psychologist Tang Renzhihui told news portal The Paper the AI voice could instead compel Li to indulge in sorrow and slow the healing process. Netizens agreed with Tang, who said the voice, though created with good intentions, may prevent those who have lost loved ones from moving on with their lives.
