The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MOA) announced on May 29 that it would take five measures to support migrant workers who have returned to their rural hometowns to work locally.

MOA Deputy Minister Liu Huanxin said at a work conference in Beijing that the five measures include expanding modern farming, increasing local agricultural specialties, improving the processing of agricultural products, fostering new industries and business models, and promoting rural projects.

Liu said that a growing number of rural migrant workers, impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, have returned home from urban areas and are unemployed, as they lack the skills to find alternative employment. Liu said that by May, the MOA has helped more than eight million returning rural workers find employment locally. He said that his ministry will also encourage tourism, e-commerce and livestreaming sales to increase rural employment.
