Caring for the Elderly

Oriental Outlook September 17, 2020

By NewsChina Updated Dec.1

Data showed that China was home to 249 million people aged above 60 by the end of 2018, the only country with a senior population of over 200 million. The number is expected to hit 487 million in 2053 when about one in three people in the country will be above 60, according to the China National Working Commission on Aging. The Medium-and Long-term National Plan for Aging, a guideline published in late 2019 by the central government, proposes a timeline to reform pensions, employment policies and medical care to address the rapidly graying society. Local governments nationwide have over the years implemented policies and measures to cope with the issue. For example, Beijing renovated a large number of old residential communities paying particular attention to the needs of seniors. To date, China has basically formed an elder care service system based on families, residential communities and elder care institutions, and the next focus is to address the gaps in the elder care system such as the shortfall of funds and lack of care personnel.
