On September 2, Times Higher Education released its latest World University Rankings in which Beijing’s Tsinghua University was ranked in the top 20, and five other Chinese universities made it into the top-100 list. Throughout the history of global higher education, top universities emerged alongside the rising of countries, and it is rare for a country to have strong comprehensive strength without the backing of higher education. Higher education is one of the main yardsticks to measure the development and potential of a country, and Chinese universities have long been closely connected with the fate of the country. At a time when the new round of scientific and industrial innovation is underway, universities will play an increasingly important role to drive the rejuvenation of China. Chinese universities should have their own characteristics while continuing to learn from leading overseas counterparts.
