Beijing Winter Olympics Break Even

The plan to host an economical Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing has kept the budgeted revenue and expenditure in balance, the Beijing Organizing Committee briefed on February 1, 2022. The direct cost of the Winter Olympics in Beijing was estimated at US$3.9 billion, slightly lower than South Korea’s Pyeongchang Winter Games four years ago. Inclusive sponsorship among homogeneous enterprises and broadcasting and franchise rights combined, added to hot sales of Winter Olympic mascot Bing Dwen Dwen, helped to rake in huge profits which offset the loss of ticket revenue due to restricted access because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The new infrastructure, including the high-speed railway and venues, will become public assets and ensure the public legacy of the Games will continue.
