Esports Hotels Pose Threat to Minors

By NewsChina Updated May.1

Esports hotels that have emerged in the past few years have been accused of accommodating adolescents and providing them with well-equipped facilities to play online games. Many teenagers addicted to the games spend lavishly as they use the hotels to play all night long. Some may steal or commit fraud when short of money. According to the country’s Law on Protection of Minors, juveniles are denied access to internet cafes, although it is not clear if esports hotels are included. However, based on the same law, minors cannot book into esports hotels unless their guardians give consent. On March 1, 2023, a regulation ratified in Suqian, Jiangsu Province, prohibited esports hotels from providing online-game services to minors. If they violate the rule, hotels could lose their license and be fined up to 10,000 yuan (US$1,436).
