Quan Hongchan

Dubbed “China’s daughter,” Quan Hongchan has become one of the most beloved athletes in the country. Rising to prominence at the tender age of 14 after clinching Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2021, the 16-year-old diving prodigy delivered a stellar performance at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou. On September 30, Quan, alongside her 17-year-old teammate Chen Yuxi, won her first Asian Games gold medal in the women’s synchronized 10-meter platform final. Three days later on October 3, Quan triumphed over Chen at the women’s 10-meter platform event, claiming her second gold.  

While Quan exudes composure on the springboard, she is just like any other teenage girl. Throughout the Asian Games, Quan was often spotted carrying her turtle plush toys everywhere she went, a delightful quirk that won her many young fans.  

Quan’s journey from humble beginnings endeared her even more with the public. Born in an a village of Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, Quan has tirelessly supported her family from a young age. Quan told media that she took up diving to help pay for her mother’s substantial medical bills following a severe traffic accident. Her perseverance and fearlessness in the face of adversity have touched the hearts of many.  

With her exceptional talent, endearing personality, and inspirational backstory, Quan has garnered an immense following online. She has 1.18 million followers on Sina Weibo, and an astonishing 6.63 million on Douyin, China’s TikTok. As Quan continues to captivate audiences, her fans eagerly await her future triumphs and inspiration she brings to the nation.
