The China Society of Automobile Engineers in conjunction with government agencies and corporations released the Roadmap V1.0 for the Low-carbon Emission Development of the Auto Industry on December 7, 2023, which proposes to reach peak carbon emissions by 2030.

The roadmap, which was worked out under the guidance of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, for the first time clarifies the scope for calculating auto industry carbon emissions: direct emissions from vehicles, fuel consumed during manufacturing, and indirect emissions from consumed electric power and heat.

The roadmap proposes to keep improving energy-saving technologies to reduce the consumption of traditional fuel and continue to promote key technologies for new-energy autos, especially zerocarbon fuel technology.

According to Li Jun, honored chairman of the China Society of Automobile Engineers, vehicles are a major source of China’s carbon emissions, taking up 8 percent of its total and 80 percent of total carbon emissions in the traffic field.
