The evolution of Chinese tech manufacturers has been emblematic of the country’s industrial advance. Nearly 20 years ago, Japanese and South Korean firms dominated the LCD market, leaving Chinese enterprises struggling. However, in 2003, BOE Technology Group’s acquisition of Hyundai’s display business marked a turning point. Over the next decade, BOE’s efforts bore fruit as its display shipments for smartphones and tablets rose to global prominence. In 2018, TCL pioneered Mini LED displays, surpassing traditional LCD technology. These initiatives propelled Chinese enterprises to contribute 68.7 percent of global shipments for large-screen TV panels by 2023. Today, the focus has shifted to organic LED technology, with domestic entrepreneurs emphasizing the importance of global competition in driving technological advancement. This strategic approach underscores China’s journey from follower to innovator in the global tech landscape.
