The 7th World AI Conference and the High-level Meeting on Global AI Governance was held in Shanghai from July 4-6, where experts discussed the governance of AI technologies and the technology gap between countries.

Experts discussed how AI technologies can benefit global economic development while stressing caution over potential problems, such as information security and how it can be detrimental to balanced global development if access to cutting-edge tech is denied to developing economies.

The conference released the 2024 Shanghai Declaration on AI Governance, which calls for sharing AI technologies, promoting AI-related international exchanges and cooperation, equal distribution of AI-related infrastructure and preventing technological barriers worldwide.

This declaration conforms to China’s recent resolution on improving international cooperation on AI development which was passed at the 78th UN General Assembly held on July 1. The resolution proposes to help developing countries improve their AI development international cooperation and to increase their say on the global governance of AI technologies.
