The government of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province recently conferred the title of “Role Model of Righteousness and Courage” upon Hu Youping, a Chinese bus attendant who sacrificed her life to stop an attack on a Japanese woman and child.
The attack happened at about 4 pm on June 24 when a Chinese man allegedly stabbed a Japanese woman and her preschooler son who were waiting for a school bus, injuring the two Japanese nationals and Hu who was aboard the arriving bus.
Hu succumbed to her injuries at hospital on June 26. Injuries to the two Japanese nationals were not life-threatening.
Witnesses told media that Hu tried to stop the suspect by holding onto his arms from behind, but he turned and stabbed Hu. Police arrested the suspect, reportedly an unemployed man in his 50s surnamed Zhou.
At a press conference on June 28, Mao Ning, spokesperson of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, praised Hu as “a shining example of the kindheartedness, bravery and everyday heroism in Chinese people, who would not hesitate to stand in harm’s way to help others.”
