The Chinese and Thai governments issued a joint statement on increasing cooperation to combat trans-boundary crime, such as human-trafficking, online scams and cybercrimes during a visit by Thai Premier Paetongtarn Shinawatra to Beijing in early February 5.
It comes after Chinese actor Wang Xing was allegedly trafficked from Thailand across the border to a cyberscam center in Myawaddy, Myanmar. A police operation saw Wang rescued and he returned to China on January 11.
The Myawadday region is one of the biggest global centers of cybercrime.
On January 17, China’s Ministry of Public Security announced it will make full efforts to rescue other Chinese nationals trafficked to Myanmar, and on February 14, Thai police said that 10 people linked to Wang’s abduction had been deported to China. On February 19, Thailand announced it had rescued up to 7,000 trafficking victims from Myanmar, and was preparing to send back some 200 people to China on February 20, the Bangkok Post reported.
