According to the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), an emergency response mechanism triggered by early meteorological alerts now covers the whole of China.
The announcement was made on October 11 when China’s State Council held a press conference to discuss the achievements of the country’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025).
According to CMA Director Chen Zhenlin, China has already established a land-marinesky meteorological observation system which consists of nine Fengyun satellites, 842 weather radars and more than 90,000 ground meteorological stations. The system has increased China’s detection rate for disastrous weather to 83 percent and improved the advanced detection rate of severe convective meteorological events by 13 percent.
The “seamless and full-coverage” intelligent digital system can forecast regional rainstorms, high temperatures and cold waves 3-7 days in advance, predict national weather disasters 15 days in advance and predict global weather anomalies six months in advance, Chen said.
China’s direct economic losses from meteorological disasters as a percentage of GDP dropped by 0.12 percent on average during the 14th Five-Year Plan. In the same period, the whole country has used artificial rainfall and snow enhancement to increase precipitation by 167.7 billion tons, and artificial hail suppression operations have reduced economic losses by 60.3 billion yuan (US$8.5b).
China’s meteorological services have benefited over 70 industries, including agriculture, traffic and transportation, healthcare and new energy like wind power.
