The 20th Group of 20 (G20) Summit opened in Johannesburg, South Africa on November 22, 2025, where a declaration for strengthening multilateralism was adopted.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, the G20 122-point declaration, titled “G20 South Africa Summit: Leaders’ Declaration,” underscores the need to address global challenges, including climate change and growing economic inequality and instability, through multilateral cooperation. It calls for stronger support for developing countries to advance inclusive growth and sustainable development.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang delivered a speech at the first session where he emphasized the importance of international solidarity and urged the G20 to face global problems squarely, explore solutions and help bring all parties back to the track of solidarity and cooperation.
This is the first time the G20 summit has been held in Africa, and is regarded as a pivotal moment for Africa as it seeks to elevate its role in global governance and advance development priorities shared by the Global South, even though the US chose to boycott the multilateral summit.
