According to China’s National Technical Committee for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Standardization, during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), the committee released 34 national TCM standards, bringing the total number of national TCM standards up to 36.

During the period, the committee concentrated on improving a standardized system for TCM, which covers fundamental TCM knowledge, TCM clinics, medicine information and medicines for minority ethnic groups. The committee has also set up pilot sites for standard research and design and promoted translating the standards into foreign languages.

In July 2023, Chinese authorities published rules on TCM, stating that from July 1, 2026, Chinese traditional medicines with unclear labeling in any section regarding contraindications, adverse reactions and precautions will no longer be allowed to register for sale. Experts said many types of medications could be affected, but that the move is necessary to standardize and upgrade the industry.

According to data from the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, by the end of 2024, TCM-related clinical centers, hospitals and patients increased by 43.3 percent, 16.7 percent and 58.9 percent compared to the end of 2020.
