Short drama production has become a hit not only in China's most developed cities, but also in ancient and scenic cities, like Zhengzhou, Henan Province, Xi'an, Shaanxi Province and Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Over the past few years, abandoned or unfinished developments in those cities have been renovated into film studio complexes, many of which have become tourist attractions. Short dramas are no longer considered lowbrow entertainment. Instead, they are tightly plotted and imbued with local cultural themes. Stimulated by increased investment and overseas market expansion, the industry creates substantial job opportunities, and saw a nationwide viewership of nearly 700 million in 2025. Experts believe the making of short dramas can be accessible to everyone in the future, but imagination, in-depth thinking, judgment and aesthetic appreciation will remain essential, yet hard to achieve.
