Complicated, costly and lacking a closed-loop mechanism, early cancer screening in China awaits institutional improvement. In 2022, over 4.8 million Chinese were diagnosed with malignant tumors and almost 2.6 million people died from cancer across the country. Compared to developed countries, early cancer detection rates in China are low. For instance, more than 90 percent of patients with early-stage gastric cancer can be cured, but over 80 percent of cases are diagnosed at mid- to late-stages. A common fear of gastros-copy screening is a deterrence for timely treatment. Meanwhile, high-precision screening, which is not covered by medical insurance, is prohibitively expensive for most. Although the country encourages early screening, there are no established referral systems, diagnostic reviews or critical follow-ups to save lives. experts emphasize that addressing public anxiety over cancer requires not only promoting early screening but also raising public awareness for healthy lifestyles.
