Olympic swimmer Sun Yang, known for his gold medals and doping controversies, once again has found himself in hot water, this time over a reality show.

Sun and his wife Zhang Doudou, a former rhythmic gymnast, appeared on Hunan TV's Viva la Romance. What was intended to be a sweet glimpse into their life together instead sparked online outrage.

A light-hearted jab from a co-star, folk singer Ma Di, who said "He [Sun Yang] is not worthy of you," was removed from later broadcasts, reportedly after Sun's mother allegedly complained to the producer. As a result of the negative attention, old rumors resurfaced online, including one from a decade earlier that claimed Sun has a now teenage son with an ex-girlfriend, former airline attendant Li Yingnian.

Sun Yang's publicist denied all allegations and filed a report with the public security bureau.
The incident reignited a debate over the line between public scrutiny and cyberbullying. Some netizens argued that while reality shows offer exposure, they also tacitly invite invasive attention into their stars' private lives. For public figures like Sun and Zhang, athletic achievement can be overshadowed by personal imperfections, making them fodder for public entertainment.
