This year, women-led hackathon are turning heads in China. From April 3 to 6, Shenzhen in Guangdong Province hosted the SHE NICEST Women's Hackathon, a 48-hour coding marathon focused on AI hardware such as glasses, toys and wearable devices.

The 161 competitors ranged from teenagers to women in their 50s, including product managers at tech firms, high school students, artists and liberal arts majors.

During the two-day challenge, they developed products addressing women's real-world needs, such as PMS relief earbuds, which use sound therapy to relieve menstrual pains, and smart glasses designed to enhance safety for women walking alone at night.

Tech media outlet Leiphone praised the hackathon for not focusing on gender issues, but encouraging women to define and solve problems from their own experiences, filling gaps often overlooked by male programmers.
