China's Ministry of Commerce on August 5 announced the country's inaugural national security investigation in the foreign trade arena, targeting imported office equipment with printing and copying functions that feature foreign system software.

The investigation will pay special attention to foreign system software that covers driver software and embedded software developed, tested or maintained by foreign individuals or entities.

Investigators will weigh the national security risks by inspecting the impact of imported products, technologies or services, domestic demand and the extent of reliance on foreign imports, as well as the competitiveness of local office equipment manufacturers and their ability to meet local demand.

The investigation will also examine the impact of relevant foreign government policies and measures on China's national security interests, as well as any other matters affecting national security interests in foreign trade.

A spokesperson with the Ministry of Commerce said the inquiry will abide by legal procedures and protect the lawful interests of all involved stakeholders.

The investigation is to be completed within 12 months of the date of the announcement.
