A young woman's social media posts exposing maltreatment at an isolated disciplinary institute have sparked public outcry. Her forced confinement was permitted by her parents. Living in crowded dormitories and served poor-quality food, she and other confined youths suffered both physically and psychologically from constant punishments and brutal treatment. Under harsh circumstances and stringent surveillance, many of them self-harmed or made suicide attempts, while their parents were charged high fees after being duped into believing their children were on the road to recovery. Due to a gap in the law, the obvious legal violation was not cracked down on until recently, though experts argued both the institutes and parents can be sued in line with the existing Criminal Law and Civil Code. Some professionals pointed out that these parents care more about family authority than the needs of their children.
