China's tertiary industry scale is expected to hit 100 trillion yuan (US$14.9t) by the end of the decade. In 2025, the industry's value added exceeded 80 trillion yuan (US$11.92t), accounting for 57.7 percent of GDP. Meantime, it employed 358 million people, almost half the employed population. The growth is largely attributed to digital, intelligent and platform-based service industries with the average annual growth rate estimated at more than 20 percent. Industrial upgrading is stimulating substantial demand for innovation and commercialization. Cities like Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan, all in Guangdong Province, have shifted their focus from manufacturing to research and development as well as brand and supply-chain management. In Changsha, Hunan Province, equipment manufacturer Sanyi Group is moving into intelligent production. Economists believe China's tertiary industry could have more potential when compared with developed countries.
