Smoking Emoji Deleted from China’s Social Media

Many anti-tobacco experts have praised Sina Weibo for disabling the smoking emoji

Sina Weibo, China's equivalent to Twitter, recently deleted emojis representing a person smoking from its platform because there were concerns that such emojis might mislead young people into linking being "cool" with smoking, the news site The Paper reported.

The move was praised by Beijing Tabacco Control Association (BTCA), which suggested other domestic online platforms, such as Internet giant Tencent’s WeChat, should disable similar emojis from their social network apps as soon as possible.

According to Chinese Center For Disease Control And Prevention, about 20 percent of junior students around the country have tried tobacco-based products, meaning that the epidemic of tobacco among young people cannot be ignored.
