A woman garnered attention for a post explaining how her boss criticized her for using the Chinese equivalent of “uh-huh” to answer his question during a text conversation on
WeChat. Screenshots of their conversation showed the woman had replied with the interjection “ng” to her boss’s question about whether she had arranged a business trip for the following day. “Don’t say ‘ng’ to a leader or client. It’s basic WeChat etiquette,” the boss replied, to which the woman said she believed it was “a trivial matter.” While the woman was likely looking for a sympathetic audience with her post, in which she considered quitting her job, many social media users stood with the boss, saying that such an emotionless reply could imply the speaker is impatient or not really paying attention.
