An elementary school in Chengdu, Sichuan Province sparked outcry online after it opened classes for second graders that teach girls to knit and boys to assemble model rockets and planes. The school’s headmaster, Fu Jin, said the classes aimed to help students “better understand themselves.” Netizens accused the school of gender discrimination. “Give me a reason why girls cannot assemble models and boys cannot knit,” read a comment on Weibo. Following the news, China Women’s News, a newspaper under All-China Women’s Federation, responded with nine pictures of women working in rocketry with a caption that said these classes should be based on students’ interests rather than gender. The post has received over 5,000 likes and hundreds of supportive comments.
