A charity set up to fund the education of girls has come under fire for also helping boys. A donor to the China Children and Teenagers’ Fund (CCTF) program took to social media after learning from public information that around half of the children aided through the program were male including a 19-year-old student. The donor, identified as “Mogui Damijiao” on social media, posted that she felt cheated. While CCTF said many boys from poverty-stricken areas were also in urgent need of help, some argued the charity should have alerted donors first. “Mogui Damijiao” accused CCTF of reinforcing the persistent discriminatory view in rural areas that investment in girls’ education is a waste.
