Authorities in Shanxi Province have come under fire after proposing to ban the sale of “ghost money” or ceremonial paper money burned in traditional funeral rites. The Shanxi government described the custom as a “feudalistic remnant” and condemned the practice for polluting the environment. Opponents of the regulation argued that the custom helps console the bereaved with the hopes their loved ones will find riches and happiness in the afterlife. Experts suggested authorities take people’s feelings into consideration when issuing bans on traditional customs. Local officials have told media they are still soliciting public opinions on the regulation.
